There are basic items that we should always bring with us when we leave the house, “essentials”. The reason they are called essentials, is because they are just that: essential. Simply leaving the house, we usually have a cell phone, keys, and some form of money. As running out to do an errand across town requires specific and necessary items, camping does as well, only each requires different things for different purposes. There are many items you should be acquainted with for the interior and exterior of your camper so that you can plan accordingly.

Interior Camper Accessories:

Insulation is any material used to reduce or resist the flow of energy. Some types of insulators include:

Thermal insulators (reduce the flow of heat)

Electrical insulators (reduce the flow of energy)

Acoustical insulators (reduce the flow of sound)

The Knob is a movable control that is used to change the settings of the controlled instrument (i.e. The automobile used for outdoor camping.)

Steering wheels are the type of steering control that is used in most modern vehicles. It is part of the steering system controlled via the driver. The rest of the steering system responds to the actions the steering wheel produces.

Storage Units are used for keeping materials brought for outdoor camping. Some basic examples of storage units are cup holder, storage bins, and coolers.

Exterior Camper Accessories:

Awning-A secondary covering attached to the exterior wall. Typically, it is made of canvas or acrylic cloth, which is stretched over a light structure of one of the following: aluminum, iron, steel, or wood. The design ends up something of a truss, space frame, and planar frame.

Tent-A shelter built from material draped over a frame of poles or ropes. Tents can either be attached to the ground with pegs or stakes, or it can be freestanding.

Hubcap-(aka: “mud flaps” or “wheel covers”) A decorative disk on the wheel of an automobile, which covers at least the central section of the tire. Many cars with alloy wheels or styled steel wheels generally use smaller ones, while stamped steel wheels often use full wheel covers to conceal the entire wheel.

Trailer- A vehicle, which is not powered, but instead pulled by a vehicle, which is powered. You can use to store goods and materials. It is weather-resistant and can be used to sleep in.

As a camper, having these accessories indicates that you are well prepared to have a safe, fun camping trip. Experiment with a variety of accessories to find the ones that work best for you. You may find that there is a couple camping accessories that you just cannot live without.

Even the most seasoned of campers was once a beginner. Face it, we all have to learn sometime. So, we have put together these useful tips so that a beginner camper can come up the learning curve a little faster. Maybe this information will help you to avoid some painful experiences, and better enjoy your first few camping trips to the great outdoors.

Make, Use, and Maintain a Camping Checklist
By making and using a camping checklist you have at least given some thought to your trip and done a little bit of upfront planning. By using the list you will be much less apt to forget something critical to your trip. Take the list along with you and add to it as you think of things that you wished you had brought. This way your list gets better with each trip, and it makes it that much easier to plan the next one.

Be Familiar With Your Camping Gear
If you have bought a new tent, lantern, cook stove, or some other gear its a good idea to try these out prior to your camping trip. There is nothing worse than trying to set up a new tent for the first time when its starting to get dark. This is also true for trailers or tent trailers. Become familiar with their set up prior to your trip, and get some experience backing them up, so that you do not have a tough time when you get to the campground.

Set Up Camp Before Dark
Arrive at your campsite early enough the first day so that you have plenty of daylight to get your tent and other equipment set up. This will get you off to a good start so that you can relax and enjoy the outdoors. Be aware that it gets dark much earlier when you are deep in the forest.

Plan Your Meals Before the Trip
Plan your meals before you leave on the trip. This way you will know what food to buy, and what you will need in order to prepare it. Try to avoid getting stuck stopping at a convenience store, far from the city, where items are limited and often very expensive.

Bring the Right Clothing
When packing your clothes make sure that you have enough clothing in case someone falls into the lake and gets all wet or something else unexpected happens. Be sure and bring a swimsuit and towels if swimming is in your plans. Make sure to have some sweatshirts, light coats, and rain gear in case it gets cold and wet. Pack enough, but do not overdo it. Remember you are probably space limited on what you can fit in your car, and to some extent you are roughing it so you really do not need near as much stuff as normal.

Is Your Tent Big Enough?
There is nothing worse than having your family all packed into your tent like a can of sardines. Even though you are roughing it, you can still enjoy a little bit of comfort. If your tent is large enough and you even splurge for some air mattresses you can be sleeping nice and comfortable. We have a 9 ft x 15 ft dome tent that fits our family of four very comfortably. What I like best about having a bigger tent is that it gives us room to walk around the beds, and still have space to stack clothes or luggage. Even though this is a pretty large tent it folds down to a small size and hardly takes up any space, so unless you are backpacking, I would recommend going with a larger tent just to be on the safe side.

Make Your First Trip Close to Home
I would recommend going to a campsite pretty close to home (within 1-2 hours) for your first trip. That way if anything too terribly wrong happens, then you can just drive home. Its always good to get some recommendations on places to go from some of your friends that are experienced campers. They will probably know some good places to go for your first camping trip.

Be Sure and Take Flashlights
Make sure and take flashlights and check their batteries prior to the trip to make sure that they are good and strong. Flashlights will be helpful if you are changing in a dark tent or if you have to get up in the middle of the night and go to the bathroom. We do not want you stumbling around the woods in the dark do we? Lanterns are also very handy, especially if you want to light up your campsite and play some games around the picnic table. These now come with small screw-on propane tanks that are inexpensive and very easy to use.

Check on Fire Restrictions or Burn Bans
Check ahead of time and make sure that there are not any fire restrictions or burn bans at your campground. If you are looking forward to a good old campfire (and what camper is not?) than you could be greatly disappointed if a burn ban is in effect. However, if a campfire is a go, then make sure that you bring some firewood, and some kindling or newspaper to get your fire going, along with some type of lighter. Some parks have firewood available for sale, but not all do, and most parks will not allow you to pick up twigs and branches off the ground to burn.

Check Weather Conditions Prior to Your Trip
If severe weather is predicted for your camping area, and you can schedule your trip another time, then do it. There is nothing worse than being confined to your tent or slopping around in the mud for a few days.

Obey All Park Rules
Remember to obey all park rules and be courteous to other campers. Sound carries much further in the forest, so keep your voice down, especially at night. At the end of your stay, leave your campsite clean and ready for the next camper.

Note Your Favorite Campsites at the Campground
Once you have been to a campground that you like and scouted around some, make note of the campsites that you like the best. This way you will remember them for future trips, and if you can reserve a particular site, you will know which ones you are most interested in.

We love to camp, and we hope that your family will also find it fun. Hopefully, some of the tips that we have shared will make your trips more enjoyable. Have a safe trip!

Last time I went camping, I wish I had been more resourceful to “spice up” the most exciting adventure I have experienced during my stay at one of the best camping facilities I have ever visited; that of a sandy beach. Although I always leave my house to go camping after checking everything from my list of things I wanted to take and I make sure that my car gas will last for at least some considerable part of the journey, I prefer while being at the camping spot of my choice, not to do plan or schedule anything. Just do whatever I feel like whenever I feel like it.

But people do not always agree with my plans and this is usually the time when each one has to find his or her own tree to place the tent that will host his or her existence for the duration of the trip. This is not a joke. When I reach my destination and check my camping list I try to relax completely and avoid organizing every single moment of my vacations. In case people wish to continue doing so, I have no objection but I will simply not follow if I do not wish to. So, regardless of the kind of camper you are, I would strongly recommend for you to consider making your own camping checklist and use it every time you are getting ready to for your next camping adventure. A little advanced planning will make your camping trip easier and your life simpler. Then it is always feasible to forget the organizational freak you hide inside somewhere across the shore and enjoy your vacations accompanied by your closest friends and partner.

There are several categories of gear you might need, so it is better if you begin by categorizing items according to their main category: basics, fire building, dinning and cooking, lighting, and miscellaneous equipment or extra items you might not think of carrying with until you realize you needed them.

Among the basic items is the tent, a sleeping bag, a simple camping stove, food and water. But apart from the necessary items, other gear can accommodate you during your camping time and help you feel more like home. For example, your list may include, plastic ground sheets, an air mattress, plastic storage boxes, blanket, folding tables and chairs, pillows, a first aid kit, rope and scissors, a well-working knife, a hummer and a shovel, sunscreen, toilet paper, insect repellent spray, towels and washcloths. For your kitchen supplies you might need a can and a bottle opener, cookware, cutlery for preparing food, a lighter/matches, the appropriate fuel for the camping stove, dishwashing detergent, a coffee maker, a thermos, tablecloth, a pot holder, utensils, plastic garbage bags and aluminum foil.

In addition, if you wish to be able to see where you are going during the night it is important for you to bring more than one flashlight and plenty of batteries. Before buying lamps make sure you can carry the gas or liquid they use. Moreover, you will probably need to pack a screwdriver, a bottle and a can opener, a pair of tweezers and scissors. Miscellaneous things include a sewing kit, reading material (I would put this right after the tent), paper and pen (and then this would follow) or a battery-operated clock.

When you are going to go on a hiking and camping trip it is essential to bring the proper equipment. You will want to bring the proper footwear and clothing according to the weather you will encounter. A tent is a lightweight way to provide excellent shelter.

If you are going to a location and then do your hiking in and out of there you can bring a stove to do your cooking. They may have a barbeque you can use to cook on either way you will need to plan according to the way you plan to stay. If you plan to take along the family you can get a nice campground. Then take some hiking trips to one of your favorite fishing holes or to do some site seeing this way you can bring all your camping supplies to the campground.

Today you can find camping gear that will make your camping and hiking trip comfortable and fun. There are several manufactures of camping and hiking gear. Here is three of the most trusted and well known in the industry Coleman, Browning and Cabelas. They all three make fine camping and hiking gear with great warranties in case you should have a problem.

First you are going to need a tent for you and your family, friend or companion. Coleman, Browning and Cabela’s all make a great tent from a one person to 10 of great quality and craftsmanship. Cabela’s has a 10-year warranty and Coleman has come out with the new Weather tek system that has been tested in extreme weather and guarantees to keep you dry. Browning as you may very well know is one of the best firearm makers in the world and they bring this dedication to quality to there camping and hiking gear. Their tents are made from quality materials and craftsmanship to keep you and your loved ones warm dry and safe.

Today’s sleeping bags are made to withstand the extremes. Depending on where you plan to go and what time of year will determine the type of sleeping bags you will want to bring. You can get bags that can be use for milder temperatures to 32 degrees below freezing so choose the bag for the appropriate place you will be camping or hiking. They also have them made especially for children that help to keep them warmer and more secure due to the proper fit.

Now that you have your shelter and bedding you can gather the rest of the gear you will need. Most of these products can be purchased from these manufactures knowing you will be getting a well-made and durable product. You will need a way to either cook your food or at least reheat it. Coleman has been the leader in this department for many years now. They have stoves small enough to fit in a backpack to ones that you can cook a full course meal they burn on different types of fuels which makes them convenient.

Ice chest come in just about any size and configuration so depending on the size of your party and what you will be keeping will determine the type of ice chest to bring. You can purchase specific camping utensils or save the old pots and pans from the house and use them they work just fine and can save a bit of money.

Flashlights and a good First Aide Kit are a must you may have an accident and need some bandages or aspirin. You know you are going to be in the dark and a good flashlight can be a lifesaver. Cabelas XPG Xenon lights are their lightest and brightest light they make and they come in three sizes. Coleman and Browning both carry lines of quality flashlights you can choose from. You will need a lantern for those nights while you are sitting around the campfire enjoying your family and friends.

There is something about these camps that simply revolts everyone – the uncomfortable sleeping conditions. For some they are the deciding factor, important enough to disuade them from the whole affair of being united with nature for a week. Sleeping in bags can be a hideous thing, it causes back aches, neck aches, let alone the fact that those bags keep slipping so that you spend the whole night being partly uncovered. The second option may be a camping bad: an opportunity, which means that you have to drag the bed to the camp, it takes a lot of space, and may be really heavy. The third option is to have a camping mattress with you.

Are camping mattresses any different, you may ask yourself as a seriously-troubled camper. Well, yes, they can be a bit cosier, but you have to search hard to find the proper type. There are several types of camping mattresses, but not all of them give you the feeling of completion and heavy sleep, which is expected from a sleeping stuff. There are commonplace mattresses. They are with floating air but are quite uncomfortable when it comes to bumping: they make large and uneven bunk, which makes it ridiculous to sleep at all. They are hard to fill up with air as well.

The second type is the inflatable camping mattress, which is somehow easier to inflate. It is cosy, and it takes no space. It can be huddled at the back of your car, and you will never notice it. Inflatable mattresses were somehow expensive in the past, but recently they’ve come in action, so that there are price discounts. You may find them either in markets or on the Internet. You’d better buy an inflatable camping mattress with a separate pump, as this will ease your life. A separate pump means that you can pump it on the camp itself, and all will depend on your will. It is really easy to pump, it takes about a minute to be ready, and about less than a minute to remove the air.

Queen size mattresses are another good option. They are bigger, and even cosier. Whichever type of camp mattress you choose, make sure it is proper for your needs, and it fits in your tent of course, so that it doesn’t stick out of it after pumping with air and expose you to all of nature’s pesky pests.

Camping is a very popular pastime for many. The opportunity to get away from the daily grind and enjoy a few days in nature draws many people to this activity. Although camping can be a welcomed relief from a hectic lifestyle it is not an activity which is completely without stress. Much of the stress in camping stems from the process of planning the trip. Once this planning is completed and all the necessary equipment is purchased and packed the campers are free to relax and enjoy the experience.

The type of camping equipment you need for your trip will depend largely on the type of camping you intend to do. Generally there are two types of camping experiences known as car camping and backpacking. Car camping includes camping in which a car can be driven close to the camp sites while backpacking is a trip in which the campers hike, with all of their camping gear, to the designated camp site. The gear required for these two distinctly different endeavors is largely different.

The focus on equipment for car camping is typically comfort. Because car camping sites are so easily accessible, it is possible to bring along a number of pieces of equipment which help to make the camp site as comfortable as possible. Some pieces of equipment the campers may wish to bring include a large tent, cots or inflatable sleeping mattresses, pillows, chairs, elaborate pieces of cooking equipment and even screen houses for the eating area. In many cases, equipment requiring electricity may also be included in the equipment because many of these camp sites provide access to electricity. These pieces of equipment may include small refrigerators, heaters, radios or even television sets. The amount of equipment will depend largely on the type of experience the campers wish to enjoy. Campers can certainly bring along all of the comforts of home or they may wish to be completely minimalist despite the relative accessibility of the sites.

Packing for a backpacking camping trip is a completely different story. In this scenario the camper must hike with all of their equipment to the designated camp site. As a result campers who undertake a backpacking adventure typically bring along only the basic necessities. They also search for the lightest possible options available in selecting gear. For example backpackers may omit a tent from their gear list entirely and opt for a tarp which can be fashioned into a shelter while in the backcountry. Those who prefer to have a tent may search for a tent which is as light as possible. In this search for lightweight equipment ounces are considered significant and a tent weighing an ounce or two less than another tent is considered favorable. From the tent and sleeping bag to cookware and food supplies packing for a backpacking trip involves selecting only the most necessary pieces of gear and opting for the lightest pieces of equipment possible. Additionally, a sturdy and roomy backpack as well as a comfortable pair of boots and a flashlight are considered necessary pieces of equipment.

One of the most difficult things about getting ready for camping is getting organized a remember all that gear to bring. I have been using this list for over 15 years- modifying it slightly here and there. Its amazing how little camping has changed. Even when you add children to the mix the stuff to bring doesn’t change all that much. Over the years we have found that it is actually easier to keep most of this packed up and set aside for camping. So we have a bin filled with things like table cloth for picnic table, tablecloth clamps, can opener, corkscrew, cutlery, etc. Everything we need is there and we don’t have to worry about packing. Most these I picked up at garage sales or dollar store.

Hiking and backpacking in the wilderness means leaving the safety and predictability of civilization behind. That is part of the adventure, and part of the danger. Here are six hiking and backpacking tips you can use to make it much safer, without taking away from the adventure.

1. Carry a compass, a map, and the knowledge of how to use them. Even if you don’t have a good map. any map is better than nothing. People lost in the wilderness have often hiked farther into it because they had no idea in which direction was the nearest road. Practice with the compass near home, and use it before you need it, just to keep in practice.

2. Bring the necessary safety items and knowledge. On Mount Whitney I saw hikers eight miles from the nearest road, at nightfall, with no water, facing a sub-freezing night with short sleeves. They underestimated the time they needed for the trip. They also hadn’t prepared for the possibility of their hike taking longer than expected, or for possible changes in the weather. Check weather reports, think of all the possibilities, and have some preparation and planning for each before you leave.

3. Take care of your feet. Your feet might not take you back out to safety if they are covered in blisters. Stop to air out your feet a few time daily. Condition them beforehand. Bring a spare pair of socks to change into in case your feet get wet or too sweaty. Cover “hot spots” on your feet with moleskin before they become blisters. Stop to shake stones and sticks out of your shoes or hiking boots.

4. Carry matches and practice making a fire. Try making a fire and lighting it with one match. Try it in near home when it is raining, and try it in the snow too. A fire really can save your life. People rarely die from starvation in the wilderness, but they commonly die from exposure. Learn how to keep yourself warm and dry when hiking and backpacking, and always carry matches and a lighter.

5. Let people know where you are. how can anyone can come to the rescue if nobody knows where you are? Leave an itinerary behind with someone you trust. Should you carry a cell phone? I don’t care for them myself, but they do save lives all the time. You might want to take it and just leave the ringer off until you need it. Just be sure to charge the battery before you go.

6. Learn a few survival skills. Basic survival skills make hiking and backpacking safer as well as more interesting. Just remembering that sleeping under a pile of dry grass or leaves can keep you warm could save your life someday. Knowledge of a few wild edible plants can feed you when you lose your food, and make a trip more interesting in any case.

People new to the wilderness, but also experienced outdoorsmen have paid the ultimate price when they forgot or refused to take a few basic precautions. It helps to read hiking and backpacking tips like these, but apply them too.
